Kurt Mattix completed his fourth season on the Wayne State University football staff in November 2007.
His 2007 squad had 30 takeaways, the most in nine years by a WSU team. The 13 interceptions were the most since the 1989 squad picked off 14 passes. WSU's 32 sacks were the most since 1992.
Mattix led the Warrior defense to a remarkable turnaround in 2005, his first year as defensive coordinator.
His 2005 defensive squad improved its national ranking in every category from the 2004 team. Most impressive was allowing 30 or more points only once, at No. 1 Grand Valley in a 36-22 setback. WSU's scoring defense improved from over 40 points a game in 2004 to 22.4 in 2005. In 2006, WSU allowed just 23.2 points per game including twice allowing only a field goal (at Findlay and at Gannon).
In 2006, one of his defensive backs (Derrion Fuqua) earned honorable mention All-America honors as well as First Team All-GLIAC accolades.
He was hired at WSU as the secondary coach in March 2004 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in June 2005.
Mattix, 31, came to Wayne State after working for two seasons (2002-2003) as defensive backs and defensive line graduate assistant coach at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
Before working on his master's degree at BSU, Mattix was the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Anderson University for one season (2001). He helped the Ravens to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title.
Prior to joining the Anderson staff, Mattix spent one year (2000) as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Tri-State University.
A 1999 graduate of Valparaiso University, Mattix attended the University of Indianapolis for two years (1994-96) before completing his bachelor's degree in physical education at Valpo. He earned a total of three varsity letters (two with the Greyhounds and one with the Crusaders).
A native of Portage, Ind., Mattix graduated in 1993 from Portage H.S.
He is single and resides in Detroit.
