COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Wayne State men's swimming and diving team finished in sixth place at the 2008 NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Missouri S&T. The Warriors, who totaled 259 points in the meet, have finished eighth or better in each of the last four years.
After breaking the school record with a preliminary time of 1:48.80 in the 200 backstroke, Sean Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) lowered the mark to 1:48.01 in a fourth-place finish in Saturday's finals.
In the 200 breaststroke, Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden) posted a WSU record-breaking time of 2:00.23 and finished third, while A.J. Erard (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) came in 14th (2:06.81).
Diver Cayce Bolt (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Mott) took fifth on the three-meter board (426.20) and, in the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay combination of Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley), Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden), Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), and Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) placed fourth (3:01.52). The relay time and Rzepa's leadoff time surpassed the records set in the preliminary swim as well.
In the four days of the national meet, the Warriors broke school records in 10 different events and did so twice in five of those events.
