COLUMBIA, Mo. - Six members of the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team, which is in sixth place after three days of competition, qualified for Saturday's finals at the NCAA Championships.
Sean Smith's (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) third-place time of 1:48.80 in the 200 backstroke eclipsed the previous school record of 1:50.11 set by David Lutz in 2004. Matt Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) finished 23rd in a time of 1:54.36.
Christer Tour (Farsta, Sweden) qualified for the "A" final in the 200 breaststroke, placing fourth (2:03.06).
Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley), Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden), Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) came in eighth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:02.85), setting a WSU record. Additionally, Rzepa's leadoff time of 45.87 broke the school standard in the 100 freestyle.
Three individuals participated in the preliminary 100 free but were not among the top 16 finishers. Bedran came in 23rd (46.09), Bergstrom placed 31st (46.31), and Rzepa finished 35th (46.44).
Saturday's final events, which will include the 1650 freestyle and the men's three-meter diving, are slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. ET at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
