DETROIT - Nine members of the 2007-08 Wayne State men's swimming and diving team were named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic team. The Warriors finished in second place at the 2008 GLIAC Championship and sixth place at the NCAA Championships.
To be eligible for GLIAC All-Academic status, a student athlete must have: a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or greater (on a 4.0 scale); must be a starter or key reserve; and must not be a freshman or first-year transfer.
Selected to the GLIAC All-Academic team were seniors David Fontecchio (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and Matt Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern), redshirt junior Jamal Roberts (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech), juniors Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden) and Sebastian Rzepa (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley), and sophomores Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), James Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale), Aaron Rahn (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore) and Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay).
Fontecchio and Leix earned the award for the third time in their careers, while Roberts and Bergstrom became two-time honorees and Rzepa garnered his first award. Bedran, Ekleberry, Rahn, and Shields were all eligible for the first time this season.
